Illustration done for a personal fantasy project.

In this world, dragons don't mindlessly burn down villages and terrorize humans.
Even though numerous people died in the past encountering these mighty beasts, most attacks were not unprovoked... Dragons actively hunting humans for food was a rare sight.

As years passed and people improved their weapons, tools and means of defending their towns and cities, encounters between the two became less and less frequent. Before long dragons were barely a threat to human communities. Instead, they increasingly became an actively hunted species forcing them to retreat into wild and remote areas. Still their numbers dwindled rapidly.

When dragons became a rarity and were thought to go extinct, laws were enacted to protect these majestic creatures and hunting became a punishable crime. However, this also caused dragon body parts to become highly valuable.

Here we see a group of poachers who have hunted down a dragon and its two pups, luring them with a massive fire beacon.
The dragons are killed and then harvested for body parts to be sold in illegal trade and on black markets.

Monsters, and i´m not referring to dragons... Even in fiction, poachers are shit.
Great art, really embodies the suffering of these poor creatures. And the piece of shit they are the poachers.

Nicely drawn and painted, but is anyone over the age of seven supposed to believe a few tiny humans with simple medieval weapons would be able to kill a gigantic flying dragon like that?  Do you understand how thick the hide of scales would  be, and the force it would take to pierce them?  Do you know  musket balls often bounce of the backs of crocodilians rather than pierce their skin?   This is the reason the 'mainstream' world continues to make fun of the fantasy genre - for even the talented writers and artists apparently have no conception of real human (and animal) capabilities, and continue to churn out ridiculous, fairy tale, 'dragon slayer nonsense' only a small child might take seriously.  Scientists inform us that early man  could not even survive in a world inhabited by walnut brained theropod dinosaurs  a fraction of the size of your dragon.  If you understood things like human dependence on agriculture and domesticated animals, you would realize that a even single 'enraged' dragon of the size you illustrate could create a famine that would wipe out an entire continent  of iron age tech. humans with near total impunity to retaliation, and makes your little backstory utterly laughable.  Far from being 'poached' such creatures would either be mankind's gods, or their destroyers.   What a waste of great artistic talent, but thanks for sharing your work here.

For someone interested in realism and accuracy, you sure love the idea of "gigantic *flying* dragons". Given you apply the traits of crocodilians to give us an idea of how well-protected dragons are, I shall apply their traits as well: Saltwater crocodiles are on average about five metres in length and weigh around half a ton. Extrapolating from there, the dragon pictured in this drawing - both longer and thicker a crocodile - would probably be in the range of several tons to even a few dozen tons, but the exact numbers don't matter.

Let's compare that to the heaviest flying animals (in history, because the heaviest living flying animals extremely rarely exceed 20 kilograms): Argentavis magnificens, the heaviest flying bird, had a wingspan of about seven metres but weighed merely 70 kilograms. One of the largest pterosaurs, Quetzalcoatlus northropi, had a wingspan of about twelve metres and weighed somewhere around 200 kilograms. Despite a seemingly massive wingspan and low weight, some researchers claim the quetzalcoatlus only used brief bursts of powered flight until it could take advantage of thermal soaring (using rising air currents to sustain flight) because its powered flight would not be efficient enough to support prolonged flight.

Dragons, if real, would have been much more like armored mammoths than fast violent creatures capable of "wiping out an entire continent". For example, the Tyrannosaurus rex was a predator of several tons in weight, but its unusually quick method of movement was not comparable to that of the dragon's, and it was much more lightly built than a dragon with a "thick hide of scales". Although clearly a force to be reckoned with, the dragon would be vulnerable to the mobility and teamwork of humans who would be able to tire the creature out (just like we did with the mammoths), especially if it was weakened with a few well-placed ballista shots during the initial ambush and distracted by its instinct to protect its young.

You're taking it too seriously, since every fantasy world has different kind of dragons in them. Some turn to humans, other don't. Some dragons speak and are highly intelligent, while other dragons are just beasts.

Would it be ok if I used your picture to illustrate a short story about a dragon my father wrote? I'm planning on making an album with his story and a few pictures to give him for his 80th birthday. Your painting is very cool and would fit perfectly. It would be for personal use only. Thanks!

No worries Scarlet, remember it is only somebody's strange fantasies put to paper.   If dragons like that actually existed virtually everyone over the age of seven understands that a few humans with swords and spears couldn't possibly kill one of that size, and if it were ever attempted, the dragons would simply exterminate them. .   I think the artist may have been playing waaaaay too many juvenile video games to come up with something so silly.  Perhaps it is an illustration for  a children's fairy tale, for surely no thinking adult could ever take such nonsense seriously.  Just laugh at the idiocy of it rather than be outraged.

Child, please grow up and just appreciate the dedication put into this beautifully melancholic artwork.

Fucked up world this is. I still dont see how any kind of armor, even if its completely fireproff, could protect you from the size of those jaws. Any animal of that szie should be able to completely crush  a human being.

Human ingenuity always finds a way, and it's not like they were climbing into its mouth. In fact, I am under the impression that they tried very hard not to be inside of its mouth; they also ambushed it.

Actually, no.  Scientists will tell you humans could have never survived dinosaurs, let alone far bigger and deadlier (and usually intelligent)  flying dragons.  Mankind would only survive if such dragons permitted it, which makes this artwork, and most other 'dragon slayer nonsense' rather ridiculous, despite the quality of the work.

If you get your kicks by arguing to death about the feasibility of dragon poaching in artwork, well then who am I to stop you. But a note: Your entire position is rather ridiculous, because 'dragon slayer nonsense' could be very appropriately shortened to 'dragon nonsense,' yes, in case you hadn't noticed, dragons themselves are a figment of the human imagination and your 'scientific' arguments are a joke considering how silly the prospect of such creatures really is.
